Cohort Analysis for Shopify Bundle Buyers: Understanding Long-Term Value

By Bundle MixMatch Team·

What Cohort Analysis Tells You About Bundle Buyers

A cohort analysis groups customers by a shared characteristic at a specific point in time and tracks their behaviour over subsequent periods. For bundle buyers, the most valuable cohort analysis compares the purchasing behaviour of customers whose first order included a bundle purchase to those whose first order was a single product. Tracking these two cohorts over 30, 60, 90, and 180 days reveals how much more (or less) bundle buyers spend with your store over time.

Setting Up the Analysis in Shopify

Shopify's built-in analytics includes cohort reports for customer repeat purchase behaviour. To segment bundle buyers specifically, you will need to either use Shopify's customer tagging system (tag bundle buyers at the point of first purchase) or export order data and segment it manually in a spreadsheet. The manual approach gives more control but requires more effort. For stores with significant volume, a dedicated analytics tool like Klaviyo or Triple Whale provides more granular cohort capabilities.

Key Metrics to Track Per Cohort

Track three metrics for each cohort: purchase frequency (how often each cohort buys within the analysis window), average order value (how much they spend per order over time), and cumulative revenue (total spend per customer over the analysis window). Compare these three metrics between your bundle buyer and non-bundle buyer cohorts to quantify the LTV premium, if any, associated with a bundle first order.

Applying Cohort Insights to Bundle Strategy

If cohort analysis confirms that bundle buyers have higher 180-day LTV, use this data to justify deeper first-order bundle discounts. The increased discount cost is funded by the additional lifetime revenue. See the LTV guide and install Bundle MixMatch free.
